UK manufacturer of self-adhesive labels Crown Labels has expanded its production capacity following the installation of a Domino N730i digital label press.

The new press replaces one of the company’s two Domino N610i digital label presses and is intended to support increased production volumes while enabling the business to produce a wider range of premium label applications.

“When we saw the quality of the N730i, the higher resolution, and the faster speeds, it was a complete no-brainer for us,” said Tom Hardy, director of Crown Labels. “The gradations are beautifully printed, the text reversals are finer, and everything we have seen from the new machine has been superb. It takes us to the next level and boosts our production capacity.”

According to Crown Labels, the N730i enables production speeds of up to 90m/min in high-speed productivity mode and offers print resolutions of up to 1200dpi. The seven-colour press, which includes orange and violet inks, has also enabled the company to transfer more work from flexo to digital production.

“For many applications, we have found digital production to be more competitive than flexo. We have significantly improved lead times, and we can begin production almost immediately without the lengthy make-ready processes associated with traditional printing methods,” explained Mr Hardy.

Crown Labels first invested in Domino digital printing technology in 2019, installing an N610i in response to customer demand for shorter lead times, increased numbers of SKUs and more frequent artwork changes. A second N610i followed in 2022 before the company upgraded one of the presses to the N730i to further increase production capacity.

The company says digital printing now accounts for more than 65% of its turnover, compared with around 20% in 2019.

“We’d highly recommend Domino to any label printer. The service levels and response times that we get from Domino have been superb from day one. Whether that’s the sales support that we’ve had when we were investigating new machines or the actual service engineers themselves, they’ve been a pleasure to deal with,” said Mr Hardy.

Craig Clawson, UK sales manager at Domino, commented: “Crown Labels are more than just our customers – they are our long-term partners. It’s been very rewarding to support them on their digital journey – first with the N610i and now, to see how the N730i is helping them to take quality and capacity to the next level. We look forward to supporting Crown Labels for many years to come.”
