Polish packaging producer Drukarnia Tamir is preparing to begin high-volume digital folding carton production with the Koenig & Bauer Durst VariJET 106 at the end of August following installation and training.

Founded in 1993 and now led by the second generation of the Krywulec family, has built its business on offset production of folding cartons, laminated corrugated packaging and leaflets. It supplies customers in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food, automotive and appliance sectors across Poland and Europe.

Tamir operates two production sites in Bystrzyca Kłodzka, with a third facility under construction. The company says the VariJET 106 will be used primarily for short- and medium-run work, replacing older offset capacity for more than 3600 jobs and over 5.6 million sheets annually. It expects work that currently requires two offset shifts to be completed in a single VariJET shift, while freeing capacity on its remaining offset presses.

The company also forecasts six-figure annual savings through reduced waste and lower production costs.

Michal Krywulec, president of the management board of Tamir, said the company wanted a digital press that would complement rather than replace its offset production. He said compatibility with existing workflows and the ability to print on the same carton substrates as its offset presses were key requirements, allowing jobs to move between technologies while maintaining consistent quality.

He said the company had evaluated a number of digital solutions before selecting the VariJET 106, describing it as the first system that matched Tamir’s production model and substrate requirements.

“We come from a purely offset environment, so our decision to move into high-volume digital folding carton production was based on a clear business case and a view of how we want to develop our production in the future,” he said.

Mr Krywulec added that the press would improve efficiency on short and medium runs while enabling applications such as variable data printing and faster turnaround on repeat orders. He cited a recent job requiring an additional 250 cartons after an initial run of 70,000, which the company was able to produce quickly on the VariJET without offset makeready or significant waste.

Daniel Velema, managing director of Koenig & Bauer Durst, said the installation reflected a broader shift towards industrial-scale digital production in the folding carton sector. “The VariJET 106 was designed exactly for this kind of environment – real production, real efficiency gains and real integration between digital and offset.”

The VariJET 106 combines Durst’s water-based inkjet printing technology with the Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 platform and is designed for short- and medium-run folding carton production.
