Italian flexible packaging converter Sacchital Group has become the first company globally to install Screen’s Truepress PAC 520P, a new digital inkjet press designed for paper-based flexible packaging using water-based inks compliant with European safety standards.
The installation, supported by Screen’s Italian distributor REM, marks a “significant” step in the transition from plastic to sustainable paper packaging. The move reflects growing demand for recyclable, low-impact materials and aligns with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which promotes greater circularity across the sector.
According to Alberto Palaveri, executive member of the Board at Sacchital, CEO at Åkerlund and Rausing (part of Sacchital Group), and president of Giflex, the investment supports the company’s vision of combining sustainability with performance. “As the market shifts toward sustainability, we wanted to be proactive. The Screen Truepress PAC 520P allows us to offer a digital solution for paper packaging that is flexible, competitive, and eco-conscious,” he said.
The Truepress PAC 520P is engineered for printing on recyclable, heat-sealable paper substrates. Its water-based inkjet technology enables short-run and variable printing, providing faster turnaround and reducing waste. Sacchital can now deliver completed packaging reels within 48 hours, improving time-to-market for applications such as seasonal promotions, market testing, and SKU proliferation.
Yukiyoshi Tanaka, president of Screen Graphic Solutions, said the installation represents a milestone for Screen’s entry into the flexible paper packaging market. “This collaboration with Sacchital signals a major step forward in our mission to drive sustainable innovation in packaging,” he noted.
The Truepress PAC 520P integrates easily into existing production environments, allowing converters to adopt digital paper packaging without significant infrastructure changes. Its compact design and proven inkjet platform – already used widely in commercial and label printing – offer both flexibility and scalability.
As part of their partnership, Sacchital and Screen plan to explore new applications and support customers transitioning to paper-based packaging formats. Mr Palaveri added: “With Screen, we’re not just installing a new press – we’re helping to shape the future of sustainable packaging.”
