To demonstrate the effort made by some brands to provide sustainable packaging solutions, the European Association for Carton and Cartonboard Manufacturers, Pro Carton, has published a list of environmentally friendly packaging in time for Christmas.

A recent independent research study amongst 7000 consumers, commissioned by Pro Carton, showed that 64% felt that brands and retailers were not doing enough to introduce more environmentally friendly packaging. In highlighting some examples, the association wanted to show that many brands are doing an awful lot to improve the sustainability of their packaging.

‘Packaging plays a vital role at Christmas time more than during any other season, so it’s worth highlighting some of the many good guys that are doing their bit by using more sustainable and recyclable components in their packaging,’ said Tony Hitchin, general manager. ‘The brands we’ve listed all entered our ‘Save the Planet’ Award this year and have shown real commitment to a more sustainable future.’

The 2018 list of ‘nice’ examples from across Europe include:

  • Fragrance brand Aura Mugler Eau de Parfum comes in a refillable bottle and is packed in an embossed recyclable box made of cartonboard. Brand owner Clarins Group also spent time creating the packaging without using costly production processes.
  • The L’Occitane Reine Blanche skincare range comes in fully recyclable, premium cartons made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified material.
  • Glenlivet 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky uses a foil-less metallised board for a minimal carbon footprint. It is 100% recyclable, does not generate any waste and the carrier film can be re-used up to five times.
  • KitKat Senses chocolate comes in an unfolding, flower-like tray that is completely repulpable. The box is 100% cartonboard, without any plastics or plastic wrapper.
  • Nespresso’s packaging now holds 16 coffee capsules, reducing the product’s carbon footprint when being transported.
  • Netherlands-based Fonkels produced the Pop-Up Cup, which consists of a folding carton cup with an internal bag, protecting any content from contamination.
  • Fresh produce packaging Flatskin uses 75% less plastic compared to a conventional tray or shrink packaging without any loss of product quality, earning Van Genechten Packaging the top 2018 Pro Carton ‘Save the Planet’ award.
  • Rose Bio-Manufaktur is a smart paper cup that can be filled with liquids up to 80°C yet be stored chilled. It has a 42-day shelf life and is microwaveable.
