Xeikon and Kurz have developed a combined digital option for single-pass, inline metallisation when producing labels and packaging using next-generation dry toner technology.

Cited as a ‘unique one-step embellishment method’, it is said to offer a ‘versatile, low-cost alternative’ to traditional hot foiling. It is also claimed to be the first food-safe digital metallisation option on the market.

This development specifically combines Xeikon’s Titon technology with Kurz’s Digital Metal process. After printing CMYK with heat-resistant Titon toners on a Xeikon TX500 press, a special transfer toner is then applied to the designated metallisation areas before the web continues to the Kurz Digital Metal module. With the freedom afforded by digital printing, including orders of just one label, the new digital metallisation process can be used to add both solid areas and very small details (in positive and negative) in 1200dpi resolution anywhere in the design. Each label can be different with variable elements in print and metallisation matching each other. As such, this method is claimed as ‘remarkably precise and efficient’, utilising the print file for metallisation.

No additional process steps are required in pre-press or during the converting phase, with no need no need for stamping tools as are necessary when traditionally applying hot and cold foil. Digital metallisation in this way can be applied to a wide variety of substrates, including challenging uncoated papers. Semi-transparent metallisation is also an option. Variable foiling can be used for personalised consumer labels, variable security elements or paper-based packaging with metallisation.

Jeroen Van Bauwel, director of solution design at Xeikon, said, ‘Printers are constantly searching for better ways to add value to the labels they produce for their customers. Meanwhile, brand owners are looking to maximize shelf standout with brilliant designs that shine and sparkle. They also want to get to market faster, at a lower cost.

‘This new digital metallisation process offers unlimited possibilities for production of high-quality, highly embellished labels with Xeikon’s Tition toner technology. Metal effects are created in one process without needing special adaptations to the print file. And since it’s all done inline, no highly-skilled operator intervention or re-registration are needed. It’s as simple as adding another colour.’

Filip Weymans, vice president of marketing at Xeikon, added, ‘Together with Kurz, Xeikon is pushing the boundaries of digital embellishment with this advanced solution which will appeal to the high-end market due to its multiple benefits and exceptional quality.

‘The continuous advancement of Xeikon toner technology and the new solutions it enables, are driving even more value for label printers and their brand owner customers, while also supporting sustainability by taking out more waste in the production process.’

This single-pass inline digital printing and metallisation option will be unveiled at next week’s Labelexpo Europe 2023.
