Siegwerk has unveiled HorizonNow, a new sustainable business strategy which touches on all aspects of the company’s business as well as building on its pre-existing efforts to develop a circular economy. The strategy outlines seven measurable targets, based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which Siegwerk has committed to realising by 2025.

HorizonNow has been designed to focus on four areas of impact which Siegwerk considers integral to its business. These are Operations and Supply Chain, Product Safety and Responsibility, Circular Economy and People and Communities. As part of the strategy The Siegwerk Executive Board has also approved the establishment of a new Sustainability Office, to be headed by Alina Marm, head of global sustainability and circular economy.

The seven goals laid out in the strategy are:

  • Achieve carbon neutral scope 1 and 2 emissions globally
  • Ensure 100% of Siegwerk suppliers are committed to UN Global Compact CSR requirements
  • Establish product environmental footprint data for 100% of Siegwerk products
  • Be the trendsetter for the safest inks by proactively improving Siegwerk’s products and setting new industry standards in consumer and environmental safety
  • Manage our portfolio so that 75% of all products or services sold enable reusable, renewable or recyclable packaging
  • Achieve a minimum gender representation at the executive level of 15%
  • Ensure a Total Incident Rate of less than 1.0

In addition to these seven points, Siegwerk will also pursue certification by sustainability ratings provider EcoVadis, to externally monitor and verify its performance.

‘The packaging industry is under increasing pressure to provide more environmentally sustainable options for the future,’ explained CEO Nicolas Wiedmann. ‘As the sponsor of the HorizonNow initiative, Siegwerk’s ambition is to conduct business with the next generation in mind while driving the latest innovations in safe, circular and digital packaging solutions.’

‘These are aggressive, industry-leading, targets which will ensure Siegwerk’s actions will have a direct impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and society as a whole. To ensure our success, we are putting in place the proper organisation and leadership to deliver on our promises.’

Mr Wiedmann also expanded on how Siegwerk’s solutions are already helping customers to deliver their own sustainability requirements. ‘To achieve our goals, we still have more homework to do, and this will require working together in tandem with our customers and other important business partners,’ he finished. ‘To deliver, Siegwerk must build a sustainable business that remains economically viable. This was always going to be challenging, but myself and the Executive Board strongly believe that HorizonNow is the right strategic direction to take, and that we will be successful in achieving this aggressive objective.’
