BASF Colors & Effects (BCE) has opened a new research laboratory in Germany, strengthening its commitment to pigment innovation.

Located at the company’s site in Besigheim, Germany, the laboratory will focus on developing pigments manufactured and marketed under BASF’s Colors & Effects brand.

Alexander Haunschild, senior vice president of BASF’s global pigment business, said, ‘With the installation of this research laboratory in Besigheim, we are strengthening the rapid development of near-market innovations. Through the complete on-site support and the proximity of production and research, we support the development of our inorganic colour pigments as well as the Paliocrom effect pigments.’

Prior to this laboratory opening, the research activities had mainly taken place in Ludwigshafen. In June 2018, BASF had announced an increase in production capacity for Paliocrom effect pigments at its Ludwigshafen and Besigheim locations.

Mr Haunschild  said, ‘Following the expansion of capacity for bismuth vanadate and Paliocrom effect pigments, the laboratory opening also shows that we regularly invest in the Besigheim site.’

BCE was recently acquired by Sun Chemical parent DIC Corporation. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020.
