The biennial Hunkeler Innovationdays featured high performance digital printing and paper handling systems. The applications on show have broadened considerably and there was an interesting digital labels and carton system shown publicly there, reports technical editor, Sean Smyth.

Swiss companies, Bograma and Atlantic Suisse Tec, showed a webfed printing and finishing system for cartons of labels. The system combines UV inkjet printing, in CMYK at the show (a total of six colours are possible) and rotary die-cutting to delivery. The print station uses Atlantic Zeiser Omega print heads that Atlantic Suisse Tec has integrated into the complete line and optional print monitoring with a camera is available to provide full traceability. The number of heads and print width can be configured between 216-540 mm while the Bograma BSR 550 servo rotary die-cutter handles a maximum length of 750 mm for board up to 500 micron caliper.

After cutting and creasing, finished blanks are delivered, with stripping and punching out final blanks that are delivered in a shingle stream into a stacker. This means that nicks are unnecessary and very clean cuts result. The system is simple to use, with short set up times in the 5 to 15 minute range as a high performance print on demand carton, or label solution.
