Italian printing organisation StampaSud SpA has launched a new intelligent packaging innovation through SmartLab, its labelling division, which gives users almost unlimited information on their packaging.

It allows consumers and users to access a huge amount of information ranging from marketing materials to product origins and freshness indications all triggered from the packaging printing.

Commercial and R&D director, Tony Calo, said, ‘We wanted something that allowed digital systems to work at 360° on a platform of print that is in reality the basis for most communication. There was currently nothing in the market that had the ability to do this, so we built one ourselves. Now, thanks to our technology, branders, manufacturers and printers and not least end users and consumers now have a brand new dimension on packaging.’

With this system, products of all types can be properly traced and monitored ensuring quality and authenticity.

The system allows manufacturers to ascertain the whereabouts of a product at a click, supply technical information, reveal counterfeiting, be used for product recalls, supply analytics and builds up client trust as never before.

The SmartLab is greener and more cost effective when compared to RFID or security tagging solutions, and is more interactive than NFC or QR codes but can be incorporated with these technologies if needed.

Marketing functions allow monitoring of client interest and satisfaction as well as up sell and cross sell, recommendations and social sharing of product information and full analytical and cloud services.

The system has been devised with packaging specifically in mind and the introductory package with marketing and track and trace facilities will be free to manufacturing and branding organisations that register before 2014.
