Manufacturer of specialty coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants and compounds, Actega has launched a new water-based primer, ACTDigi LEP Primer, at Labelexpo Europe.

Developed in partnership with HP and now part of HP’s expanded in-line primer portfolio, the ACTDigi LEP Primer is designed to improve digital print performance across a range of label substrates, including coated and uncoated paper, synthetics, and metalised materials. It has also demonstrated strong results on textured surfaces like wine labels and velvety papers, which are typically more challenging to print on.

The primer improves ink adhesion and overall print quality, and is compatible with Actega’s full range of overprint varnishes (OPVs), including UV, LED, water-based, E-Beam, and solvent-based options. This combination allows for greater flexibility in label applications and enhanced press performance.

In addition to improving print fidelity, the ACTDigi LEP Primer supports the use of decorative finishing processes such as hot foil stamping. Its high-water resistance makes it suitable for labels requiring durability, such as those used on beer bottles. The primer can also be used ahead of thermal transfer printing, making it a versatile solution for long-lasting and specialty applications.

The product was co-developed through Actega’s R&D process and HP’s digital print expertise. Designed with converters in mind, the primer is formulated to extend the life of key press components like blankets and photopolymer plates, while also reducing common issues such as foaming, yellowing, and ghosting. It can be cleaned without the need for special chemicals and is intended to support streamlined, low-maintenance workflows.

From a regulatory standpoint, ACTDigi LEP Primer is compliant with the Swiss Ordinance and Nestlé’s quality standards. It is free from solvents, heavy metals, phthalates, and CMR substances, making it suitable for indirect food contact. The product has also received Cradle-to-Cradle material health certification, aligning with Actega’s broader commitment to safe and sustainable manufacturing.

Field testing conducted with HP customers Nacara and HF Labels has shown promising results. Vincent Garrigues, digital manager for France/Switzerland at Labelys Group, noted improvements in ink coverage on complex substrates, reductions in primer usage, and longer component life. He also cited technical support from Actega as a key factor in optimising press settings and achieving consistent results.

Speaking at Labelexpo, Dr Thomas Sawitowski, senior vice president flexible packaging at Actega, described the launch as “a significant milestone” that highlights the company’s ongoing partnership with HP and its focus on advancing digital print solutions. HP’s Regina Guslitzer-Okner, head of supplies, applications, and sustainability at HP Indigo, added that the new primer reflects a shared commitment to flexibility, performance, and sustainability in a fast-changing label market.

The ACTDigi LEP Primer is now available in Europe, with global distribution scheduled for 2026.
