DS Smith has partnered with Queen Flowers to create a recyclable cardboard bouquet box designed to complement the flower brand’s existing retail packaging.

The corrugated box, developed by DS Smith, can hold three to five Kalanchoe bouquets and features two interchangeable lids – one with five holes for smaller bouquets and another with three for larger arrangements. The design uses no glue, incorporates smooth edges for easier assembly, and includes features intended to reduce trapped air and excess transport weight while helping maintain moisture levels to keep bouquets fresh during distribution.

According to Queen Flowers’ chief marketing officer Emilie Stærmose, the company wanted a solution that could be easily branded and offer better in-store presentation, while also supporting sustainability and recyclability goals.

DS Smith’s design process used its Circular Design Metrics tool, which measures packaging performance against eight indicators including material use, CO2 emissions, and recyclability. Mette Staal, cluster creative lead at DS Smith, said the packaging was developed to fit alongside Queen Flowers’ traditional display buckets and to optimise material efficiency across the supply chain.

When empty, the boxes can be flattened and placed in standard cardboard recycling containers.
