Packaging manufacturer Coveris has entered into an exclusive agreement with compostable materials specialist TIPA to produce and supply compostable labels for fresh produce in the UK. The partnership aims to help retailers, packers, and growers meet rising demand for sustainable packaging and prepare for upcoming regulatory requirements mandating compostable labels on fresh fruits and vegetables.
The collaboration brings together TIPA’s recently developed home-compostable label material – designed for high elasticity and moisture resistance – with Coveris’ large-scale production capabilities and experience in the fresh produce sector.
Following extensive testing of various materials, Coveris selected TIPA’s label film based on its consistent performance across a wide variety of produce, including apples, citrus fruits, kiwis, and avocados. The material adheres well to wet or textured surfaces and maintains its composability, making it suitable for high-volume retail use.
“We are proud to partner with TIPA to introduce a new compostable labelling solution for the fresh produce sector,” said Will Mercer, R&D director for Coveris’ Paper Business Unit. “By combining TIPA’s expertise in compostable materials with Coveris’ advanced print technology and understanding of the produce supply chain, we have developed a high-performance label that meets environmental, operational and legislative needs. Aligned with our No Waste strategy, we are focused on developing sustainable packaging and reducing waste in all its forms.”
The partnership arrives as compostable labelling regulations are being phased in across several global markets. The EU, Australia, and New Zealand have all introduced or proposed legislation requiring produce stickers to be compostable. In the UK, organisations such as WRAP and the UK Plastics Pact have backed a market transition to compostable materials for this use. The shift follows concerns over plastic contamination in composting facilities, where produce stickers have been identified as one of the top three persistent contaminants in organic waste streams.
“This partnership is about more than labels – it’s about eliminating unnecessary plastic from the food system,” said Gary Tee, vice president of global converting at TIPA. “Our certified home-compostable label material delivers on performance and, equally as important, gives brands a sustainable option. Partnering with Coveris allows us to combine expertise and provide a solution that removes conventional plastic labels from the organic waste stream and supports upcoming regulations.”
The compostable labels will be manufactured and marketed exclusively by Coveris in the UK, with roll-out expected to align with tightening regulatory deadlines.
