Amcor has invested in a new production line at its Amcor Flexibles site in Lugo di Vicenza, Italy, as part of efforts to expand production of recycle-ready packaging materials.

The extended facility is dedicated to producing the company’s high-barrier recycle-ready films, which are used in a range of packaging formats.

The new department enables large-scale production of high-barrier films designed for lidding and pouch applications across sectors including food, beverages, pet food and healthcare. The films include AmLite HeatFlex, a material developed for retort, or high-heat, applications.

According to the company, the technology allows the films to maintain barrier performance while enabling recyclability, which can help brands work toward sustainability targets and prepare for upcoming regulatory requirements.

The expansion covers nearly 7000sqm and supports several stages of the high-barrier film production process. It includes a quality control laboratory and an automated high-density warehouse equipped with temperature-controlled chambers used to cure materials and help ensure consistent product quality.

Elena Peron, plant general manager, said the project reflects the company’s broader sustainability commitments.

“This new facility is the result of Amcor’s pledge to develop all our packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable,” she said. “This expansion, combined with the Amcor team’s expertise, will support our customers in making the switch to recycle-ready packaging and contribute to a more circular packaging industry.”

The investment comes as regulatory pressure increases in Europe to improve packaging sustainability. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requires brands to move towards recycle-ready packaging by 2030.

Amcor said it is developing packaging solutions designed to help companies prepare for the regulation while responding to growing consumer demand for more sustainable packaging.
