Mondi 'spices up' ultra-high barrier paper packaging for Prymat

Mondi has collaborated with Polish dried seasoning manufacturer Prymat to develop a paper-based packaging solution for dried herbs and spices, designed to support circular economy objectives while maintaining product protection and quality.

As part of the partnership, Prymat will transition from conventional multi-layer packaging to a new solution created using Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate. The material was selected following trials and testing to assess its performance as a recyclable alternative to plastic- or aluminium-based laminates.

According to Mondi, its product impact assessment tool indicates that the solution delivers a lower CO2 impact compared with traditional multi-layer structures. The paper contains at least 80% fibre and incorporates a functional barrier coating optimised for recycling, with recyclability confirmed under the latest CEPI laboratory test method.

The material is designed to provide protection against oxygen, water vapour and grease to help preserve aroma and freshness, while also supporting high-quality print reproduction. Mondi states that the substrate has been confirmed as suitable for flexographic, rotogravure, digital and other conventional printing technologies. The paper’s stiffness enables a strong dead fold, allowing consumers to reseal the pack after opening. The packaging is compatible with Prymat’s existing filling lines, enabling integration without additional machinery investment.

Adrian Goralski, managing director at Mondi Solec, said: “It is essential to understand the individual needs of each customer when creating packaging solutions. There are often several different routes to sustainability, and at Mondi, we work closely with brands to thoroughly learn about every step of their production, distribution and end use, so that we can create and test various options and be sure we are delivering the best possible and most sustainable outcome.”

Marta Klęka-Nowa, public relations manager Prymat, commented: “Prymat, as a leading producer of spices and food additives, has consistently sought solutions to transition from multi-layer packaging to recyclable materials. Given the very high barrier requirements and the preservation of spice quality, aroma, and freshness, this posed a significant technological challenge. Thanks to our collaboration with Mondi, we were able to develop a solution that aligns our sustainability ambitions with the highest standards of product quality.”
