Herma has introduced two new label self-adhesive materials that combine clear-on-clear properties with certified wash-off capabilities, addressing growing demands for sustainable packaging solutions in the labelling industry.
These latest offerings feature transparent polypropylene film paired with an innovative permanent multi-layer adhesive designated 72Hpw. This adhesive technology provides high transparency for standard applications whilst maintaining certified wash-off properties essential for effective recycling processes.
“The 72Hpw adhesive we have developed has once again proven to be a perfect all-rounder for film applications. Its excellent permanent adhesive properties are impressive even in humid conditions, such as those sometimes encountered in beverage filling,” said Hendrik Kehl, product manager at Herma. “Its special formulation ensures both wash-off properties and transparency. This adhesive is further proof of how multi-layer technology can be used to combine different and sometimes contradictory properties in a practical way.”
The new self-adhesive materials pair the 72Hpw adhesive with HERMA PP transparent super tc film, designated as type 886, along with polyethylene terephthalate release liners available in two thicknesses of 30 microns and 23 microns. This configuration accommodates virtually all processing requirements whilst offering high-speed dispensing capabilities. During label production, both materials achieve good print quality across all conventional printing processes, making them suitable for cosmetic products, household cleaners and applications requiring weather and chemical resistance.
The 72Hpw pressure-sensitive adhesive has received certification from the Cyclos-HTP Institute as recyclable across various material combinations, including when used with Herma PP transparent super tc film. The adhesive meets recycling requirements for polyethylene terephthalate in an 80-degree Celsius wash cycle and for high-density polyethylene in a 40-degree cycle. Additionally, RecyClass has classified the polypropylene films combined with 72Hpw as fully compatible with the rigid high-density polyethylene recycling stream, whilst the adhesive also performs effectively on glass and polypropylene surfaces.
Production of both new self-adhesive materials takes place at Plant 2 at HERMA’s Filderstadt headquarters, a facility built specifically for film manufacturing. The highly automated production line ensures high-precision coating processes, creating optimal conditions for efficient processing of the self-adhesive materials into finished labels. The HERMA Group, which employs approximately 1,100 staff across three business areas, achieved turnover of around €452.6 million during the 2024 financial year, maintaining its position as a leading European specialist in packaging and product labelling.
