Focus Label Machinery and Simply Inkjet have announced a strategic partnership aimed at expanding the use of water-based inkjet technology in the labels and packaging sector.
Focus Label Machinery, based near Nottingham and active in the label industry for over 40 years, will integrate Simply Inkjet’s pigmented water-based inkjet systems into its existing range of printing equipment. Simply Inkjet, founded in 2019 and headquartered in Castleford, specialises in water-based inkjet technology for industrial applications.
The collaboration combines Focus’s experience in hybrid printing systems – particularly its UV inkjet and flexographic technologies – with Simply Inkjet’s expertise in water-based printing. Together, the companies plan to offer solutions aimed at improving cost efficiency and sustainability in digital label production.
James Thomas, head of sales and business development at Focus, said the two companies have worked together over the past six months to develop the new offering. “This is an important development for both businesses, and we’re looking forward to presenting the results at Labelexpo in Barcelona,” he said.
Simon Cooper, managing director of Simply Inkjet, highlighted the benefits of partnering with a UK-based manufacturer. “Focus’s facilities and experience in narrow web labels and packaging provide a strong foundation for scaling our operations,” Mr Cooper said. He added that the partnership will also support the engineering of print engine chassis for Simply Inkjet’s systems.
The new solution will feature inkjet printing with inline or offline priming, allowing it to print on both coated and uncoated stocks. According to the companies, this approach helps reduce material costs and improves overall system flexibility. The technology also includes a ‘first copy good copy’ feature designed to streamline print startup processes. The companies also noted the lower energy requirements of water-based printing, positioning it as a potentially more sustainable alternative to UV and toner-based systems.
The joint solution is expected to be officially launched during Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona later this month.
