AstroNova Product Identification has developed a new solution that enables printers to produce food-safe, heat sealable, flexible packaging materials on its TrojanLabel digital presses.

The new digital, narrow web method can be used in either a standalone printing mode or inline with standard packaging equipment for a complete ‘print and pack’ process. The combination of ink and lamination offers food-safe digitally printed packaging that allows users to seal in both horizontal and vertical form fill and seal machines using low temperatures for high-speed sealing.

A thin, white gloss PET film used was specifically developed to be receptive to AstroNova’s water-based inkjet inks. An inner transparent sealing layer of the film protects food products from coming into contact with the outer layer. The water-based inks are food-friendly, odourless and free of reactive chemistries, as well as in compliance with several US, European and Japanese standards.

‘Our new solution to digitally print on flexible packaging materials provides AstroNova Product Identification with an excellent new growth opportunity within the food market and beyond,’ said president and CEO Greg Woods.

The new flexible packaging method will be launched first in the US at Pack Expo.
