Callas software has introduced a new nesting technology module aimed at OEM partners developing automated print and production workflows.

The new pdfNest module enables software developers and workflow vendors to calculate optimised nesting layouts for multiple PDF files on a specified sheet size, helping to improve material utilisation and production efficiency.

Nesting is widely used in sectors such as packaging, wide-format printing, textile production and signage, where efficient use of substrate can have a significant impact on production costs. According to Callas, the module has been designed for straightforward integration into automated workflows and production platforms.

Jeremy Spencer, OEM director at Callas software, said: “Many of our OEM partners build highly automated production systems. They need reliable technology components that can be integrated directly into their workflows. The new nesting module provides exactly that: an efficient and flexible nesting engine that can be integrated into existing systems.”

The company said the new module complements its existing pdfToolbox platform. While pdfToolbox focuses on automating file intake and correction processes, pdfNest is intended to improve output sheet efficiency by optimising the placement of print items.

Designed specifically for workflow integration, the module accepts XML and SVG descriptions of items to be nested and outputs the same formats with the imposed sheet definitions. Callas said an API is included to support integration into third-party systems.

The nesting engine is being offered as a separate technology module for OEM partners and is not included as part of the standard pdfToolbox 17 release. It is intended for software vendors and solution developers incorporating Callas technology into their own products and workflow platforms.

The launch coincides with the release of pdfToolbox 17, the latest version of Callas software’s PDF automation platform. The company said several new pdfToolbox 17 features, including cut line simplification, have been developed to improve the performance of nesting workflows.

The nesting technology module is available to OEM partners through existing licensing agreements with Callas software.
