A partnership between Xaar and Polipress International is bringing digital embellishment technology to Italy’s premium label sector, particularly within the country’s wine industry.

Through the installation of Xaar’s Versatex printbar, the collaboration is introducing digital methods for applying decorative features to labels used on high-value products. More than 20 Versatex printbars have now been installed across Italy, according to the companies. These systems are being used at both printing and converting stages of label production.

Polipress said the installations support demand from label producers serving the wine sector, where packaging design and presentation are an important part of brand positioning. Techniques such as tactile varnishes, cold foiling and high-opacity whites are increasingly being used to enhance the appearance and texture of labels.

The companies say these embellishment techniques can help producers differentiate their products on shelves by adding visual and tactile elements to packaging. Such features are often used by beverage brands seeking to emphasise quality, craftsmanship or premium positioning.

Xaar’s Versatex technology allows converters to apply varnish and cold foil digital embellishments within a single unit using one fluid system. The printbar is available in both left-to-right and right-to-left configurations, enabling integration into digital label production lines.

According to Xaar, the system is designed to work alongside presses from manufacturers such as Nilpeter and HP Indigo, as well as finishing equipment from ABG International.

Tom Mooney, Versatex product manager at Xaar, said the partnership demonstrates the impact of technology collaborations within the label sector.

“Polipress’ success in the Italian wine label market is a testament to the power of partnership and innovation,” said Mr Mooney. “Versatex enables converters to deliver stunning embellishments such as high-opacity whites, tactile varnishes, and cold foiling with precision and speed, helping brands stand out on the shelf.”

Angelo Tribocco, sales manager at Polipress International, said the technology had been well received by customers.

“Together with Xaar, we have introduced a technology that quickly proved to be a real game changer,” he said. “From the very first installations, our customers immediately recognised the value: the ability to unlock new levels of creativity while achieving an efficiency and cost performance that traditional analogue solutions simply cannot reach.”

The companies say the partnership combines Xaar’s inkjet technology with Polipress’ experience in the Italian label market, with the aim of supporting converters producing premium labels for wine and other beverages.
