UPM Specialty Papers has introduced an updated version of its UPM Forte precoating technology, now available across a wider range of UPM glassine papers. The technology is designed to support labelstock manufacturers and siliconisers in improving production efficiency and managing rising material and energy costs.
For many producers, the overall cost of release liners is influenced not only by the substrate but also by silicone chemistry, energy use, and processing performance, explained UPM. The revised Forte technology is intended to help optimise these factors, the company said.
Oscar Duarte, director of label and release for the EMEIA & Americas region at UPM Specialty Papers, said that customers are seeking tools to maintain competitiveness amid recent increases in energy and platinum prices. He added: “UPM Forte technology enables our customers to prioritise their specific production goals whether that’s choosing more cost-effective silicone formulations, improving energy efficiency, or increasing production speeds.”
UPM Forte is formulated to provide a surface that supports faster silicone curing and strong anchoring on release liners. Depending on the silicone formulation selected, manufacturers may opt for fast-curing, lower-platinum systems, or curing temperatures up to 15% lower, which can reduce energy demand. Lower temperatures may also help maintain paper strength and enable the use of thinner grades, while faster curing can support higher production speeds.

For label printers, UPM states that the updated Forte glassines offer consistent high-speed release performance and may support improved print results with certain sensitive pretreated filmic face materials due to reduced silicone transfer.
The enhanced range includes three grades covering standard industrial shades and basis weights from 45g/sqm to 78g/sqm.
